They are always on, permanently mounted to the trailer so you don't have to worry about losing them. Very easy to release and ratchet down.

Only downside is I feel the mounting point only left one option on my trailer which was not optimal. If it had a longer bracket or a swivel bracket I would have a couple more ways I could have mounted it which would have made them even easier to use. As many other reviewers mentioned, the nuts do not thread on the boats. After a quick run to the local hardware store I found out the bolts are 7/16x20 thread and the nuts are 7x16x14. Great product, but like other reviewers I found the mounting hardware impossible to work with, especially since I was mounting through my trailer frame with little space for a wrench on the interior. The lock nuts wouldn't budge beyond the first dozen turns or so and I didn't want to have to cut the bolt off if I forced it further and couldn't back it out again. So I had to buy my own hardware and the install from there was very easy. The tie downs work great, are a quality build and will save me time and aggravation at the launch ramp. Five stars but for the worthless hardware. Sent wrong nut / bolt combination.
